Movie: Oculus

March 28, 2014

From Intrepid Pictures, the producers of The Strangers and Safe House, comes Oculus, by up-and-coming director Mike Flanagan. As children, two siblings witnessed their parents' harrowing descent into madness and murder. Now, as an adult, Tim (Brenton Thwaites) is released from incarceration in a mental facility and reunited with Kaylie (Karen Gillan).  Kaylie has tracked down the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror from their childhood, convinced it is infused with evil and responsible for their family tragedy. Years of mandated therapy have convinced Tim the haunted mirror is simply a myth they created to cope with their father torturing and killing their mother. However, Kaylie is determined to document the mirror’s paranormal nature and prove otherwise.  As soon as they proceed with Kaylie's experiment, flashbacks from their horrifying past overwhelm them, and soon they lose grasp of reality. Their hallucinations unravel the sinister truth from long ago, as they confront their past and try to survive the night.

From Ah Boys To Lion Men

January 29, 2014

The endearing cast of Ah Boys To Men shows off their unity in new film The Lion Men. By Priscilla Wu

Was it tough training for the stunts in the movie?
Bunz: We underwent three-month training before filming, so even though there was a bit of pressure, we were quite prepared.
Zi Jie: I am of the same height as Tosh. It was much harder for someone taller to bend down and do the stunts.
Tosh: I have a fear of heights. I was screaming when they suspended me above the ground!

You are a villain in the show. Do you have any hesitation when you were approached to do the movie?

Jasper: To be honest, I was thinking ‘oh, no’, even though I didn’t dare to raise any objection. The character, Sam, is very different from my own personality. I was worried that people will start to dislike me after the movie, especially since this is my first movie. But thankfully, Sam is actually a real softie at heart.

What was it like filming the kissing scene with Tosh?
Eva: We were informed only on the day of filming, so I thought the director [Jack Neo] was kidding. Tosh and I were frantically gargling our mouths with mouthwashes before the scene.

Andy Lau turns up the heat with movie Firestorm

December 17, 2013

Movie veteran Andy Lau puts Hong Kong police flicks one step closer to international standards with new release Firestorm.

With Firestorm, what kind of movie experience are you trying to present to the audience?
Andy: It is a highly entertaining film. We tried to be closer to Hollywood productions in terms of the standard of our action scenes.

How did you bring life to your characters?
Gordon: I think the most complex aspect about my character, Tao Cheng Pang, is how he would put love above all else. He would sacrifice his life for love.
Andy: My character is a man of discipline. He broke the rules and went from a good guy to a bad guy. It is that simple.

Which is the most memorable scene for you?
Andy: I love the scenes I shared with the little girl. A lot of my fans joined my fan club when they were of the same age as her, and after 30 years, they have grown up to have their own kids. So I have a soft spot for children.

Gordon, you share some pretty intense fighting scenes with Andy. How do you feel about that?
Gordon: I had fun. I waited for years to beat him up (laughs). We trained really long for the scenes, about three to four months. When he first called to invite me for the role, he told me that I had to go through a number of training. I asked him why is it so tough, but he told me my opponent will be him, so I thought, okay, I can vent all the anger I have buried inside me for years (laughs).

Was it hard to film the explosion scene at Central?
Andy: There was definitely a certain level of difficulty. We didnt have the technology that Hollywood has. They could take three months to film a scene like that, but we had to finish it within a month. We had to build an exact replica of the area and pay careful attention to the lighting. We used manpower, not financial power. We didnt have too much time to film this, so the scene had to be well-rehearsed. I hope everyone can see the effort we have invested in the film.

Catch Firestorm in theatres nationwide now.

Fukuyama Masaharu returns as Galileo in Midsummer's Equation.

December 9, 2013

Reprising the role of Manabu Yukawa
After Suspect X, I thought if Keigo Higashino were to write another novel and make it into a film, Id grab the chance to [portray the character] again. Instead of ending the character after the filming is done, I let the character dwell inside me and we searched for the [right] timing to match the production schedule to my schedule.

Memorising physics formulas
Compared to drama series, It is not necessary for me memorize mathematical formulae in the movie, thus making it easier for me (laughs). Those mathematical formulae always took me days to memorize everything in order&

The original novel, Manatsu no Houteishiki
I participated in the production planning, not only as an actor but also [in a role similar] to that of a producer. I met up with director Hiroshi Nishitani, scriptwriter and producer multiple times to discuss how we could make Midsummers Equation different from Suspect X. The conclusion was to follow the original novel.

Expectations for the film
Ecology has been widely talked about for about 20 years now and it has a significant impact on our lives. Incorporating it into the film was quite a challenge. It might not be a straight-forward film that could be fully understood when watching it the first time. But the audience might be able to see things differently and understand better after watching it for the second or third time.

Costar, Yuriko Yoshitaka
Changing [the female lead] from Kaoru Utsumi (Kou Shibasaki) to Misa Kishitani was hard on Yuriko Yoshitaka. As it is a drama series, there is a [teamwork spirit between the cast and crew]. Furthermore there is a certain progress of the female character in the series. It is a role that requires a lot of emotions, thus I think it is really difficult and hard on her. I think she has done a good job.

Takeru Sato Returns to the Big Screen with Sci-fi Flick 'Real'

November 16, 2013

Synopsis
After his girlfriend, Atsumis attempted suicide, Koichi, enters her subconscious mind through a state-of-the-art neurological treatment in attempt to awaken her from her comatose state

Preparing for the role
Speaking about the preparation process, it will be the squash scenes. I had to go for practice sessions for squash. [Other than that], I did not undergo any special preparation for the role. The interesting part of this film is the blurring of reality and fantasy. Audiences will wonder if one particular moment is reality or otherwise, and if Koichi is currently living in reality or the unconscious state of mind. To portray this ambiguous state is quite difficult.

The most memorable scene
What leaves a deep impression on me was the setting of Atsumis room when Koichi entered her subconscious mind. I love the setting very much. It was a rather peculiar setup. Even watching the movie after completion, I still like the set a lot.

Real is currently showing at Filmgarde Bugis+ and Kallang. For the complete interview, read Teenage January issue 301.

Lee Hong Ki shares his thoughts on his grand debut on Rockin On Heavens Door

September 23, 2013

The movie
When spoiled teen idol Chung-ui (Lee Hong Ki) is sentenced to social service at a hospice ward for assaulting a drunk, he meets a bunch of out-of-control patients. Despite their imminent death, they drink, smoke and take on part-time jobs. In a bid to reduce his volunteer hours, he agrees to help them audition for a rock band competition and rediscovers his passion for music along the way.

On the most unforgettable scene
My favourite scene is the bands performance on stage at the end of the film. Everyone practised hard for their parts and a great ending scene was made possible through all of our efforts. Of course, the music is awesome!

On his film debut
As this is my big screen debut, I wanted to do my best. I didnt want to cause inconvenience to others.

For the complete interview, read Teenage October issue 298.

Blind Detective - In Theatres Now!

July 9, 2013

We chat with stars Sammi Cheng and Andy Lau who recently dropped by to promote their new show.

Andy, you prepared for this role by visiting the centre for the blind. Can you tell us about your experiences there?

Andy: A girl at the centre left me with the greatest impression. She'd tell me, "You don't have to think about what we would do. Our world is the same as yours. We're just using a different way of looking at the world. We don't feel any different from you guys." She helped me see this world in a whole new angle.

One of the scenes in the movie involved Andy barging into the bathroom when Sammi was bathing. Has anything that embarrassing ever happened to you?

Andy: In the past, the shirts that we wore were longer, so we had to hold on to our shirts while we're using the toilet. A guy spotted me and wanted to shake my hands, so I was stunned for a moment and said, "Sorry, I'm busy now" (laughs).

Sammi: I was at a public washroom and the cubicle lock broke. I didn't pay attention to it because there wasn't anyone else around. Then someone barged in and it was really embarrassing! I didn't know what the person saw (laughs).

Andy, did you have fun eating all that food in the film?

Andy: I don't really like to eat and scenes that require us to eat, smoke and drink are the hardest to film. That's because we've to eat non-stop and no one is going to give us fresh food all the time. In the movie, there was a scene where I had to munch on chicken legs and by the time we reached the end of the filming, the food had already gone bad but we still had to eat them happily.

Five Questions with Olivia

June 25, 2013

Olivia is out with her brand new album Waiting and before she returns to Singapore for her music showcase on 13 July at Switch (73 Bras Basah Road #01-01/02), we got her to spill the beans on her latest release.

Tell us about your new album, Waiting. How does it differ from your previous releases?

This album will show you the side of me youve never seen as I grow and mature through life. Basically, Waiting is a collection of songs that reflects my moments of love, pain, joy and sadness. It is very different from before as Ive been exploring new ways of singing. I wish to share my musical maturity with everyone and I hope to give something fresh for the listeners.

Of all the songs on the album, which is your favourite and which was the hardest to put together?

I have to say it's After The Hurt and Be Yourself. After The Hurt is a song about being in a broken relationship. It feels like youre climbing a mountain alone and when you reach the top, you get the clarity of where this broken relationship is heading. This is the imagine that came to my mind when I was recording it. As for Be Yourself, I wrote this song for myself, but Im sure a lot of people can relate to it. It also happens to be the hardest song to put together because my producer and I tried at least four different song arrangements before capturing the right emotion.

We know you tried your hand at writing mandarin lyrics for this album. How was the entire song-writing process? Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I wrote lyrics for What Went Wrong and I drew inspiration from my own experiences. I had the story in mind; so basically, I did my own translation in Chinese with a bit of help from the Google translator. I actually wrote it in one night. When I wanted to put this song on my new album, I took it out again and [producer] Chen Jia Ming helped me to refine the lyrics even though he told me my original lyrics were all okay! The tracks on the album evoke quite a summery feel.

Can you name a summer tune you particularly enjoy on your personal playlist?

My summer tune would be Taylor Swifts' We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

Youll be back in Singapore for your album promotions next month. What do you miss most about home when youre touring overseas?

My mum's cooking!
